Is the runway at the kennedy space center with almost 4,6 kilometers the longest runway on the planet?
Or did anybody find any longer?
Note that the one on edwards AF base is just a little shorter.
Not by a long shot :) The one at Area 51 is 7.4kms (4.6 Miles)

It looks like only a small part of it is still in use.....

Yes, the one at Area 51 is only in partial use so I dunno if that counts. But Vandenbergh AFB in Ca is at least 4.6km long, but it's impossible to tell since the sat pics don't match in perfectly so you can't measure it accurately.

That strange....... Says only 3.6km when I measure the runways that make up the swastika.... Possibly the old DIA was longer but that sure ain't in use any more

If you have ever taken off from Denver you will know how long it takes to get airborne at 5000 feet above sea level. The air is a lot thinner and the tak off run seems to go on for ever.

Depending on just how far the tide is out, Barra Airport (read beach) must be a decent size.
Barra is the only beach airport in the world to handle scheduled airline services and can be seen at http://www.hial.co.uk/barra-airport.html
About the largest runway in Europe is Cambelltown (formerly RAF Machrihanish) hosted UK military and NATO base operations until 1997. The airport runway, is 3,049 metres (3.04900 kilometers = 1.89456077 miles) and can be seen at

Cape Canaveral has a 4,500 m runway to enable the space shuttle to land safely. At JNB 03L/21R makes 4,418m.

Nobody seems to have mentioned Madrid Barajas airport at 4350 metres. It's claimed to be the longest runway in Europe, but that seems to be open to debate.

According to the Discovery Channel last week, the runway at Denver International Airport is the world's longest runway ;)
please note: Denver International, not Stapleton! I just flew out of there last summer, DI is the new one.

There are a couple of massive runways at Edwards airforce base, one 7000m and one 8500m, out on the salt flat to the right of the base. I assume they might be an alternate site for landing the shuttle?
There is also an 8500m strip through area 51 in Nevada. Although partially paved, and only 2000m currently marked for use, I read somewhere that it was built in the 60's
Cheers

Makes the UK's longest runway at London Heathrow (12800ft - 3901m) look positively puny :-(

The runway at Groom Lake is still used. I know someone that just got back from there. Making it the longest used runway.
the longest constructed runway is in New Mexico. Can you find it? It is only used as a RADAR range, but it can be cleared for runway use.

I really can't understand why people keep insisting that Campbeltown is so big. It's not even the longest runway in the UK (as is so commonly and erroneously stated on various websites) - more than 2000 ft shorter than the longest runway at Heathrow, and also shorter than that at Boscombe down. Throughout Europe there are LOADS of runways longer than Campbeltown's.

Dubai airport is currently expanding. The new runway is 5,600m = 18,350 which easily beats Denver as the longest runway in an airport in the world.
The runway will be ready in a few months and was built to accomodate the new A380 that Emirates airlines bought over 45 of (if they get delivered!)
So DUBAI AIRPORTS RUNWAY (under construction) WILL BE THE LONGEST RUNWAY (in an Airport) IN THE WORLD

Well....South africa of all places has a runway measuring an approx 4.88 km!
apparently it is nasa's secondary landing strip.
This is all thanks to the paranoid previous government who built all these high tech military bases in fear of the rest of africa and the world attacking them!
they also apparently built a 8 lane highway/freeway in northern south africa to acomodate planes landing there...in case! i tried to find that but gave up

Check out the USA's most important bomber runway. A very little known atoll called Diego Garcia. You notice sevral B-52s & a C-5 Galaxy on the Northeast end.
Diego Garcia (http://38.101.8.68/69a51f5bac89883731a36ec2dba8e554/other/Diego_Garcia.kmz)
Vostochny (Russia) 16,404 ft
Gavia (Bravil) 16,295 ft
Upington (South Africa) 16,076 ft
Harare (Zimbabwae) 15,502 ft
Kinshasha Ndjili (Congo) 15,420 ft
Mafikeng (South Africa) 15,158 ft
Hawange National Park (Zimbabwe) 15,091 ft
Edwards AFB (USA) 15,013 ft
Muroc Army Air Field has many long runways, the longest of which, KEDW, is the world's longest runway stretching a runaway 7.5 miles or 12.1 kilometers in length.
KEDW 39,370 feet

1. Florida
2. Edwards AFB
3. Spain
4. Africa
