Google Earth automatically checks for updates, recieves them, and applies them when you open the program. Most pictures are not up-to-date, they are usually 6 months- 3 years old, but some are as old as 6 years. Here (http://earth.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=21414)is a brief statement from Google about it

When I first downloaded google earth my home town was also just a blur, but after a couple of weeks I cleared the cache and when I next checked my home town it was all in hi-res, which was a result as it meant for me that google earth just got better. Sweet.
