The 31 ft long lion was erected in their memory. Here's a better view of it. It turns out it may be cast iron rather than bronze. There's a local myth that the sculptor, George Blackall Simonds, killed himself after it was pointed out that lions don't stand the way he portrayed it, but it seems they can, and he lived a further 40 years.
