View Full Version : What this big hole?

Hi, does anyone know what this could be in Aberdeen, Scotland?

I live in Aberdeen (practically next door actually!) and i'd never seem this big hole, its not there now. But i was informed by my girlfriend it used to have water in it and was quite deep looking.

I was guessing it is either a water tank, with the roof missing, or perhaps an old gas storage tank, again with the roof missing.

Failing that is could just be a big pond, but its big, and has what look like old pillars in it as well.

Wrong file link, I think. That one points to the middle of Kazakhstan, not Aberdeen.

An old gas storage tank sounds about right, just measured some others and they're around 200 ft across so it's the right size. Looks like an ornamental pond now. It's just a thought, but the structure in the middle could be a sundial, it's aligned about right, so if it is it was taken at about 1pm. The DG Coverage layers seem to suggest it was taken in March or April 2003, so you'd expect the shadows to be a bit longer.

Yes, i supose it could be ornamental. But that area of the city is not the nicest bit. Not reason to put a big ornament there!
Plus it used to have a few factories there in the early 20th Century.

But the only old gas works i know of in Aberdeen was further south nearer the harbour area.

It was apparently as deep as 2 double decker buses though! Very deep for a pond i think!

It was a gasometer site, but now demolished.

Well i'd never been to that bit of the city, or tried looking for big holes like this. At least until i lived there last year for a few months.
Never even knew there was a gas works there! The only old one i was aware of was nearer to the harbour.

Ah well you learn something new every day!
