What type of airplane is this ?

Found this airplane near by Louisville. Any ideas ?

Can't tell for sure, but something similar to a Rutan VariEze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutan_VariEze).

Thought it may have been a Beechcraft Starship, but on close observation, the aircraft is too small & the wing orientation is all wrong.

I agree, it is a VariEze. A Starship is twice that size.

To heck with the airplane, what is the big, cone-shaped thing just N-E of the plane? Alien spacecraft? BIG windsock?

That is a big arrow that shows the traffic pattern.
