The building was constructed from 1928 to 1931 by Hanz Poelzig as the headquarter of IG Farben. After WWII it was the headquarter for the US administration in Europe. Since 2001 its part of the university. There's a controversal discussion about the name of the building. IG Farben was together with Degussa the producer of cyclon B.

Other historical events took place in this building. In the office of Dwight D. Eisenhower, german politicians were forced to develope a constitution. The building was the headquarter of the american forces in Europe up to 1952. 1975 it was renamed as General Creighton W. Abrams Building. It was headquarter of the CIA in germany.
