Kennewick man was laid to rest alongside a river more than 9,000 years ago
The skeleton, one of the oldest and most complete ever found in North America, has been under close analysis since courts sided with researchers in a legal battle with Indian tribes in the Northwest who wanted the remains found near the Columbia River, in Washington state, reburied without study.
Following discovery of the bones in 1996, the Umatilla, Yakama, Nez Perce and Colville tribes urged that the bones were covered under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
Scientists sued for a chance to study the remains and a federal court ruled there was no link between the skeleton and the tribes.
It was found that the man was deliberately buried, between two and three feet deep, his body placed in the grave, head slightly higher than feet, hands placed at his sides.
The location was riverside, with the body parallel to the river and head pointing upstream.

A little more upstream, I think!

The human remains that have come to be referred to as the Kennewick Man, or the Ancient One, were found in July, 1996 below the surface of Lake Wallula, a pooled part of the Columbia River behind McNary Dam (Nickens 1998). The remains were found under the water, but close to the river terrace that contains Columbia Park in Kennewick, Washington.

From http://www.cr.nps.gov/archeology/kennewick/index.htm: The human skeletal remains that have come to be referred to as the "Kennewick Man", or the "Ancient One", were found in July, 1996 below the surface of Lake Wallula, a section of the Columbia River pooled behind McNary Dam in Kennewick, Washington.

From Wikipedia: The discovery of Kennewick Man was accidental: a pair of spectators at the yearly hydroplane races found his skull while swimming in the Columbia River.

The McNary dam is at 45.9298548 -119.2961275, so the discovery site could be almost anywhere between here and Kennewick. Anyone know where the hydroplane races are held? That might be a clue.

Wow. I think someone should lay off the caffeine for a while. :spin:

Seriously though, I discovered that the hydroplanes are raced off Canal Drive, so I found that and your placemark's sitting there. But it was too late to edit my post and I had to get on with some work. So fair play for being right, but I wasn't really doubting you.
