Your predictions!

I apologize to all people who voted and posted on the previous poll, but a mod deleted it on accounts that I did not include the USA, so I had to start it again. :slant:

I don't know who will win, and I don't really care who wins, but I'm from Germany...so I hope they win. But with some insanely good times (Brazil), it should be quite a challenge.

You don't care but you hope they win? cool.

Man, that other thread was hilarious! What are those mods like?

Those mods actually was one, me. I take full resposability for what I did, because I was offended by commenets made by some members towards my country. So for future reference, I am very patriotic, so do not mock any country that way, because I will defend any nations pride.

So on to football...

Yeah, on to football.
What you said about all teams having an equal chance of winning is cod Brad.
USA have little chance of winning, because they arent good enough. Brian McBride might grab a few goals, he's a classic center forward and made of solid granite, but thats about al.

I really think, that with a bit of luck, England will win. theyre second favorites, and thats where we need a bit of luck.

BradG7
06-10-2006, 06:53 PM
I believe the Czechs are ranked second, only to Brazil. If you ays that they have no chance of playing, why do us Americans even show up??? Because we know there is a chance, if everything went down like it was supposed to, then why would anyone play.

Given the fact that England invented football and its rules... It is fair to say that if we are beaten... then the other team simply are not playing the game in the manner in which it was intended..

Our game... our rules... We Win ! ;)

Germany is my favorite. Here is my sophisticated reasoning behind that choice:

1. My sister-in-law lived in Germany for 2 years.
2. I bought my first collectible soccer jersey there.
3. They have amazing beer.
4. They have really good food.
5. They are the home team.
6. I'm an American and wanted to root for a team with an actual chance of winning.

BradG7

I might support Germany a little, just because they invented Bratwurst, and I love grilled Brats :D
Those rankings are odd, yes, but they must be true, they are from the site meaning "Loving Soccer like it's family"-Soccerphile ;)

The rankings are only an indication of the last 10-15 games or so, but when you spent your time playing Mickey Mouse teams like Peru and Venezuela, like the US and Mexican squads, you tend to climb the rankings pretty quickly.

Most of the teams know they have little chance of winning, but the show peice that is the World Cup is more tthan enough reason for these teams to play.

Peace, M

It might help to look a bit further than the FIFA world rankings. There's an interesting list on Wikipedia of the FIFA world cup seedings, in which there are a few surprises. The Czech Republic are only 16th, but the USA are 9th. And England 2nd! They're based on a bit more than recent form, so perhaps a bit more balanced. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seeding_for_2006_FIFA_World_Cup

btw, USA v Czech Rep being played right now, 30 minutes played so far, Czechs are 2-0 up.

Crazy game...Germany vs Poland. No goals up till 90th minute. Then three attempts in one minute, 2 hit the top beam, 1 goal, but its called offsides and doesn't count. Then in like the 91st minute, Neuville (substitute) gets the ball in. Man..I don't live in Germany anymore, but the fans must have gone crazy!

:spin:
1. Brasil is the native name, Brazil is the English name.
2. The Brazilian team can win the Cup 7th time not before 2010. Up to now they've won it five times (http://www.fifa.com/images/pdf/IP-301_09A_alltime.pdf), this time could be #6 (so the Hexachampion is kind of correct :) )

Maybe, but big scorelines sometimes mean the opposition weren't palying too well. I saw the first half and it looked to me like Serbia were just trying to collect as many yellow cards as they could, not playing at all well. I doubt Argentina would get 6 goals against a decent side.

most people say Brazil and thats the boring choice. I'll say Italy will win it.

As an Italian, I don't think that they can win this cup, according to the fact that when the opposite team blocks 2 players (Pirlo and Totti) Italy really have hard time to create something.

Beside Brasil, that is not at 100%, i can see Argentina and Spain. My outsider? Equador!

Yes, you are right, I wrote the English part wrong, "Italians" should've been singular. Why "che", doesn't it translate to "that"? :spin:

Hi,
Hard to explain. I haven't done a literal translation, but I did try to give to the italian sentence the same meaning you gave to the english one.
But yes, "che" can be traslated with "that" most of the times, but not always.

Che cosa cavolo hai fatto ieri? What the hell have you done yesterday?

Che cavolo succede? What the cabbage??? hehe, I know, we make fun of our teacher for that expression

We have an idiom in Italy that is "Conosco i miei polli", whose meaning is that I know very well in a particolar situation the people who am i interacting or talking with. The literal translation is "I know my chickens". I started saying that idiom in english, instead of italian... and slowly I started saying "I know my kitchen", instead of "chicken"...
When I moved in the USA (I lived there for 5 years) I didn't realize that I was still using that idiom inenglish, so many times I had to explain to my co workers the meaning of that.

So don't worry about making fun of teachers... I think languages are made for that :)

Brazil beats Ghana 3-0 in stoppage time.
France beats Spain (who hadn't lost a game in last 25 games) 3-1. Ribery and Zidane had nice goals.

Quarterfinals:

Before the game there were two "traditions". Germany never lost in that stadium. Italy always won against Germany in the World Cup.

Probably that helped to make our player angrier. Especially Grosso & Del Piero :)
