I think this is an old abandoned lock from the original route of the Erie Canal. In the early 1900s the canal was widened and rerouted in places to become the New York State Barge Canal. The nearby Spring House is a restaurant/bar that is situated on the old towpath, if my memory serves me correctly. That's how I come to discover this structure.

If anyone has input on this, please post it.

Thanks,

Old lock 62 on the Erie Canal
This lock was built about 1855. It was used only as a westbound lock after an addition was added in 1873.

Eastbound half of lock 62 was built in 1873. Lock 62 was abandoned in 1918 when the coarse of the Erie Canal was changed. This lock is located behind Pittsford Plaza and is accessable along a trail from French Road.

Thanks McMaster. The photos are a welcome addition to my Erie Canal knowledge. I used to hang out at the Spring House and knew it had a long history but did not know it had been around since 1822.
