Too big for a seal (nearly 40ft long) so can only say it must be a Whale.

I must say it looks very much like a whale, seems to be bleeding rather heavily. I wouldn't have thought it would do that if it had simply beached, so why is that?

I remember this sad story. :sadyep:

I think it is a beached whale killed with explosives.

It's not the exploding whale from Mnandi Beach, which is located on the coast of False Bay in Cape Town, about 125 miles south. The whale in the pictures from that event is facing the other direction (left side towards the ocean, right side facing land).

But it could be any other beached whale, since a lot of them tend to explode eventually due to the internal pressure caused by gas released during the decomposing of the carcass after the whale has died, a slow and painful process for the animal.

When helping the animal reach deeper waters is unsuccesfull (many beached whales while simply swim right back onto the beach once freed), killing it is the most humane option, and a controlled, small and targeted explosion (on the animals' brain) is preferable to a large, messy, unpredictable and potentially dangerous explosion.
