I was ambling down a dusty road somewhere in West Africa and came across these; any ideas as to what sort of trees they are?

They are shrubs. ( I have seen those in other deserts but don't know the name )

The area is next to sea . Therefore some vegetation is seen.

Go away from sea coast ( even 10 Kms ) you will not see any growth.

I believe that is the village of Tiguent.
It is on the road between Rosso and Nouakchott.

The strange black dots clustered in chevron shapes are the result of "Green Belts" (purposely planted trees and shrubs) to stop the advancement of Sand Dunes on the village.

For more information please see this page:

BTW that is a great find! Very interesting ecologically.

Thanks GEHER,

I was not aware that even in deserts they use green belt plantations..

We do it in India in semi-arid area.

It was a good information
