This is a discussion thread for the following file:<br><br><b><a href=http://www.googleearthhacks.com/dlfile22159/Aircraft-Carrier-off-Anacapa-Island.htm>Aircraft Carrier off Anacapa Island</a></b><br><br>A ~715 foot aircraft carrier 10.5 miles off the coast of California. Due to the medium quality of the picture, aircraft on deck are hard to identify, but appear to be helicopters.<br><br><img src=http://www.googleearthhacks.com/images/new/080505/407158aircraft.jpg>

I think this is some other kind of vessel. According to specs USN amphib assault ships of the Tarawa and Wasp class, they have over 800 foot flight decks.
Also you can see shadow on the water on the north side of the ship but no shadows on the flight deck, and these type vessels have an Island for operations.
I think this might be come kind of flat top construction barge or specialized cargo carrier heading to Long Beach.
Just a thought,
ps: see pic and info at, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Bonhomme_Richard_%28LHD-6%29

Definately some kind of container ship. There is no island and no elevators.

hercman, correct. This is a civilian vehicle cargo ship and not a military aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship. These ships can be found in many spots. I'd point them out, but can't do that from work. :) Maybe later.

Here's a page: http://www.mhi.co.jp/ship/english/htm/NewCentury101.htm

And the picture:

Included is a placemark to a high res image of a vehicle cargo ship with the NYK Line. It gives you a much better idea of the sort of ship this thread is about. Note the angled ramp in the back to let cars drive into the ship. You'll see the back-right corner of the ship has the same sort of ramp. Not all ships that ferry cars around like this have those, but I'd say most do.

If you will look to the northeast you will see the port of Hueneme at Port Hueneme, Calif. There is about 4 or more car carriers visiting this port a week as well as banana boats from South America. They deliver Jaguars,Volvos,Isuzus
,Kias and Kamatsu construction equipment among other things. This is the only deepwater port on the west coast between San Diego and Seattle owned by the government there is also a Navy base there which is the west coast home to the U.S. Navy Seabees. The whole base is basically nothing but a big parking lot leased to the companies who process these cars. A side note is that the location of this ship is about where the Alaskan airlines plane went in the water back in 1999.For more information:http://www.portofhueneme.org/community-home.php
