Unique Landscape: Palm Fields in Uruguay
The Palm fields located in the southeast part of the territory of Uruguay constitute an unique landscape worldwide. Its origin are surrounded by many legends, being the most extended the one that attributes its origin to the migratory movements of indigenous peoples, who ate the fruits of the palm trees along their way and disposed the seeds giving place to this unique belt of palm fields that crosses Uruguay from north-west to southeast. The palm trees that we can see today are between 200 and 350 years old, and given that a palm tree of this species lives a maximum of 350 years, this unique landscape is seriously threatened by extinction.
Although recognized as an ecosystem of world importance, many attempts from side of the Uruguayan authorities to preserve and protect the palm fields have failed and up-to-date no one single piece of palm field is under protection and its extinction seems imminent. As you can see in the pictures only adult individuals are presents in the field, meaning that no renewal is possible in the current situation.
Most of the international funds to establish a protected area in the palm fields is used by the responsible Uruguayan authorities to conduct analysis of the situation and elaborate plans that never come to an action. This is partially due to the ineffectiveness of the public system, partially due to the lack of capacity of decision or legislation of its authorities.
The simple solution of closing and sustainable managing 5000 hectares of palm fields for a period of 10 years would show that its recovery is still possible. But once the last palm dies, an this is going to be very soon, than this unique landscape would have gone forever.
