Default Firdos Square - Iraq (v2) discussion

This is a discussion thread for the following file:

    Firdos Square - Iraq (v2)

This is the site of the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue on 9 April 2003. The statue stood on the south end of the oval and is still visible in this image. The mosque with the blue dome on the southeast side is the 14th of Ramadan Mosque. The large building on the northwest corner of the square is the Palestine Hotel.

I updated the description of the placemark to include a Wikipedia link.

With the imagery update of Baghdad, the statue is no longer visible. Judging by the location of the checkpoints and the presence of the bazaar in the Green Zone, the imagery is at least a year old. A homicide bomber detonated himself in the Green Zone bazaar on 14 October 2004. That bazaar is still standing in the latest imagery.
