Blue Highways discussion
This is a discussion thread for the following file:
Blue Highways, by William Least Heat-Moon is a journey around the corners of America. His stops in small towns allowed him to find the genuine places and people that were/are still left (he wrote it in 1983).
Blue Highways - a work in progress
The route is mostly complete, except there are two or three towns
that I couldn't find (Nameless, TN is one!), and some that either
changed name or are incorrect.
The author started and ended in Columbia, MO.
I'm working on an update with a path connecting the towns,
and fixing some of the locations (adding Columbia, for one).
William Least Heat-Moon was interviewed on C-SPAN recently:
an in-depth 3-hour interview with call-ins.
When I read Blue Highways, I had constructed a mental image
of him that was very different from his real-life one.
The book is filled with gentle wit and poetic observations.
For example, on passing kite-fliers: "no strings, no flight".
Using tour allows you to take the entire Blue Highways trip!
The .kml was replaced by the update thanks to the efforts
of the site reviewers: Thanks!
Many corrections were required: some of the locations
are so out of the way that some research needed to be done.
I also added a path through the locations.
Some locations are difficult to find since they don't exist!
Liberty Bond, WA is not a place anymore: it evaporated.
The placemark is "in the shadow of Mt. Adams" as described
in the book.
