Default Funny Crop Patterns in South Africa discussion

This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Funny Crop Patterns in South Africa

This shows some funny crop patterns in western South Africa, consisting of perfectly round circles and stripes. I think the circles are from irrigation booms, but I have no idea what the stripes are for!

Cirles are signs of Pivot irrigation systems.

Stripes are called "wheel lines" Automated linear move stytms.

Look closly and you can see which way the systems are moving, (ragged edge on the back as the soil dries)

I think the stripes are simply a previous agricultural use of some sort. They put the pivot irrigation system over the old agricultural use so now you see only the remnants of the old ag use between the circles.
