    Default Route 66 discussion

This is a discussion thread for the following file:

    Route 66

U.S. Highway 66 or Route 66 was and is the most famous road in the U.S. Highway system and quite possibly the most famous and storied highway in the world. US 66 originally ran from Chicago, Illinois through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California before ending at the beach at Santa Monica for a total distance of 2,448 miles (3,940 km).

U.S. 66 was officially decommissioned in 1985 after it was decided the route was no longer relevant and had been replaced by the Interstate Highway System. Today, however, many Americans enjoy Route 66 nostalgia, and the road exists unofficially as an "historic route" in the states it once crossed on its journey from Chicago to Los Angeles.

    Hi all,

I created the above file as a basis for a more encompassing Route 66 file (it took many hours as it is correctly positioned on street level). I intend to include webcams, overlays, and photographs to this file over time in a way that the file almost becomes something like a website about Route 66. If anybody has any placemarkers of this sort from along Route 66, please feel free to post them in this thread.

Wow! Excellent work. I have taken up a huge interest in Route 66 mainly in the Arizona and California Region. My place of employment is located on it near the Colorado River area. Good luck on your future ambitions!

    This is a nice file.

In May 2000 I drove next to Highway 66 for most of its length on the way out to Ohio from California. If I had thought about it I might have actually driven on 66 rather than the regular freeways.
