Default RAF Woodvale - the last spitfire outpost?

I was born not far from RAF Woodvale - right next to the "boxes" which separated Birkdale and Ainsdale during the war years.

The "boxes" were said to contain aircraft parts - be it gliders, really flying machines or whatever - and were hidden well away from Liverpool which got hammered thanks to Dublin not observing blackout

We only had 2 bombs on or near Southport during the war and we kids really enjoyed playing amongst the "boxes" like fast cats down alley ways.

I was told that the last Spitfire in regular service flew from Woodvale but I expect a thousand other versions of this claim will exist ;-)

Anyhow, great pic of Woodvale (and the golf course)

    Cheers
    Gari
