Default Double Boat near Ellis Island discussion

This is a discussion thread for the following file:

    Double Boat near Ellis Island

This boat can be seen twice...once clearly, and once as a ghostly, transparent image. Also, a ghostly (cargo ship?) something can be seen floating along.

Welcome to GEH gronfors. I can see that you aren't familiar with our protocols - primarily the one that states we will all be nice and not call each other names.

Now - How could it be a reflection in the water? A reflection would have to reflect something. Unless there is a boat a few hundred feet above ground, upside down none the less, then it could reflect. Of course, there would have to be a whole lot of light bouncing off the upside down boat hovering a few hundred feet in the air, but that is neither here nor there.

The true answer is there are two different boats, with photos taken at two different times. (For those that think this is a transient, look closely at the back (Bow? Stern? - I can never get it straight) of the two boats. The 'solid' boat has an open area in the back, there might even be a person standing there. The 'ghost' ship has solid gray in that area.)

When Google updated the coastline around New York, they 'feathered' the new images to do a nice blend with the old - kind of a buffer zone to avoid sharp dramatic and often drastic dividing lines.

Look at the file from about 5,000 feet - you will see the feathering effect clearly, with the 'old' water being black and the 'new' water being brownish.
