Babi Yar (Ukrainian: Бабин яр, Babyn yar; Russian: Бабий яр, Babiy yar) is a ravine in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine.



In the course of two days, September 29—30, 1941, German Nazis and their collaborators murdered 33,771 Jewish civilians there. The Babi Yar massacre is considered to be "the largest single massacre in the history of the Holocaust.".



In the months that followed, many more people were seized and taken to Babi Yar where they were shot. It is estimated that more than 100,000 people, mostly civilians, of whom a significant number were Jews, were executed by the Nazis there during the Second World War.



Babi Yar is located in the middle of three subdivisions of Kiev: Kurenivka, Lukianivka and Syrets. In modern Kiev, Babi Yar is located between the Frunze and Melnykov streets and between the St. Cyril's Monastery and Olena Teliha street.
