Post in GEboards, win a SpaceNavigator!

To encourage people to start using GEboards, we're giving away a SpaceNavigator to one of you!

The way it works is very simple. Between now and next Friday, October 12 at 8:00pm EST, post as many new threads as you can. Talk about places you've been, strange images on the ground, or identify buildings in your hometown -- whatever you want.

We've randomly generated a single set of coordinates somewhere on earth. The person who starts a thread nearest that spot is the winner! The more threads you start, the better your chances. No one knows the coordinates but me, but I'll offer this clue: The location is on land and is in one of the 50 largest countries on Earth (both in population and in square miles). I know that's not much to go on, but it means you can rule out tiny places like Kuwait and Chad.

Obviously, don't just spam the system -- your threads will be deleted and you'll probably get banned. If one slips through and the winner was just a garbage post, we'll move to the next closest. You know what spam is.

The one exception to spam-looking posts is if you're identifying a building -- you don't need to say much and that'll be fine. For example, the title can be "McDonald's" and the body can be "This one tends to be kind of slow", or even just "McDonald's" again if you've never been to that one.

So that's it. Post lots and good luck! If you have questions, please feel free to post them in this thread.

Nope, the contest is over. I was waiting to post the result until I heard back from the winner.

The winning location was in southern Canada, just north of Michigan -- about 80 miles NNE of the Mackinac Bridge. The attached placemark shows the exact location.

The winner was Nickvet419, with his "Dow Diamond" post in Midland, Michigan. I had actually posted a number of things in Midland (I lived there for quite a while), and he joined in and did one. That proved to be the winner!

If any of you have ideas for other contests to get people to use GEboards more, please let me know.

OK, I didn't see the date. My old eyes. If you write end of contest in another colour, like red, then everyone would see that first.

Congratulations to Nicket419.

Strange but I don't see anything for his location. Other locations show up.

Another idea for a next contest. If you drop the EST or any american used time saying (PST and CST) it might be better for all. I think many have problems with the time in his/her country outside the USA when you have to calculate back to US time. My guess is only members from the american continent and a few outside would participate.

We in Europe go from GMT and other countries in the world do the same. Maybe we could do that too.

Yeah, I know, I hate having to deal with time zones, especially on the Internet. I wish everyone in the world could just be on the same time, use military time, or something. Having to add and subtract time based in units of 24s and 60s, just hurts my head. I suck at math, but usually with money and stuff you can go up to 100 instead of starting over at 60. Converting up seconds into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days is hard enough without trying to figure out how many hours somebody is ahead, or behind you in time zones, accounting for Daylight Savings, etc.

And don't even get me started how much I hate alarm clocks.

I found the coolest Google Gadget - it places clocks on your Google home page and you set each one for the time zones you want ready access to.

Thanks everyone! I really didn't think I would have a chance. The world is a big place.

Most of my posts are in Chicago because thats where I'm from. I saw Mickey posted the tridge in Midland, MI. That is also where my cousin lives. Last time I was there I went to a Loons game at the new Dow Diamond statium. So, I threw in a post for it. Who knew?

I'll let you all know how the SpaceNavigator works when it gets here.

I got my new toy SpaceNavigator today. I didn't realize how hevy it would be but thats part of the design. It lets you lift up on the control without it comming off the desk. Im actually quite happy with it so far. It works great with google earth. It does take a little getting use to, but after making adjustments to the controls and working with it it gets quite easy. I would recomend it to anyone who does presentations or movies. It is much more versitle than the mouse.

The only thing it doesn't do is autopan. not that I have found anyway.

That surprised me the first time as well, but I agree - it makes sense.

With the mouse you can throw the earth while panning across the map or zooming. How you do that is release the button while moving the mouse and it will continue to pan in the direction you were moving.
