This is very cool but there is a simple explanation.
These marks are from a 3-Dimensional Seismie Exploration Survey. The 6x4 dots patterns are shallow holes drilled to bury explosive charges. The pattern aids in signal quality. The zig-zag lines are raods where geophones are layed out in patterns that also aid in signal quality. This type of survey is used to map subsurface rock formations for geologic research (usually associated with hydrocarbon exploration).
