This is the lighthouse La Jument, made famous in a set of images of a massive wave striking it with the keeper managing to get back inside to safety with seconds to spare.
It's not really in terribly deep water with the island and shoals close by, but some of the lighthouses like this one are incredible for withstanding the massive punishment they receive every year from the sea. In fact in the lighthouse's Wikipedia page is a picture that gives an idea of how close it is to the island: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/La_Jument Jean Guichard, the man who took the famous photographs, has quite a few of this lighthouse on his website: http://www.jean-guichard.com/boutiqu...=index&cPath=3 A YouTube video of large waves hitting lighthouses, including this one that I've mentioned before: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNpH5tx4Pu8 |
