In 1602 Bartholomew Gosnold and 32 other souls explored the waters of New England in a small bark called the “Concord”, looking for a place to create a new settlement. After naming Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard, Gosnold and his partners choose the small island of Cuttyhunk for their initial camp, building a fort on an island in the middle of a pond. It was agreed that twelve of the explorers should return to England and that the remainder should stay behind to prepare for more settlers. Within a month, however, they decided that their position was untenable, and they abandoned the site and returned to England.
In 1607 Gosnold joined Captain John Smith's expedition to Virginia. He died that same year in Jamestown and was buried there. |
