Maybe the river was dirty, or just very dark

this is called a Haff, a geographic term for a lagoon formed at the mouth of a river owing to the presence of a sandy bar or spit or land.

this does look like a lagoon. familiar with the area but can't pinpoint this one exactly. you can see the camp site to the east. also note the sand bank in the mouth. further on the coast eastwards you will spot the big lagoon near botrivier (town and river) and even further on the big holiday town of hermanus and the accompanying lagoon (on the edge of the high res area)
