Default What , Where , How ?

New with GE , l have observed that in most European countries
when one is looking from a distance ,there are several brownish
patches here and there . The places in those areas (brownish)
can be seen clearly and in consederable detail if one zooms down
whereas the rest are rather blurred .
What are these blown patches ?
Can one download additional "patches " and if so where and how
can one add them to the existing GE .

Thanks replies

Hi Geobas! welcome to Google Earth and GEH!

Firstly, those "brown box" areas are areas in high-resolution, these are areas of data google has purchaced or obtained and has on their database.. You can read more about why certain areas are not high-res here

You can see all the covered areas in all continents here

You cannot add to the database but you can make overlays with higher resolution data, You can see a great example of that here

You can learn how to make overlays here

Enjoy!

Thank you prompt reply .
However the file l downloaded (080505-__Mount_Olympus_-_Greece_overlay_[4359].kmz) cannot be loaded although l give at the appropriate filename in
the New Image Overlay form - i.e C:\OVERLAYS\080505-__Mount_Olympus_-_Greece_overlay_[4359].kmz
On the other hand when trying with the browser and targeting the OVERLAYS
folder - where l have the overlays - seems like it does not recogneze .kmz
files .
What am l doing wrong

if you have the overlay in "my places" or a folder in "my places", right-click and choose "save as", select the location and it will be saved as an kmz.

btw, kmz = zipped kml, if you want the picture from an overlay out of a kmz, unzip them and you will get the pic and the kml.
