Default Nukes near Area 51, NV discussion

This is a discussion thread for the following file:

Nukes near Area 51, NV

Lots of craters all over the place.

Editor's note: Extremely large crater, undoubtedly from an atomic bomb test. Entire area, particularly going south from here, is littered with nuclear test sites and attendant craters.

The United States military does not test nuclear bombs on the mainland. They are tested either underground or on abandoned, unclaimed islands far into the oceans. A recent world treaty does not allow above ground nuclear bomb testing in any country. The holes shown on Google Earth are probably left over from nuclear tests in the 1950s.

Default Nuclear Test Information

First, the United States did test nuclear weapons on the mainland in a variety of locales. Colorado, Alaska, New Mexico, Mississippi, and parts of Nevada. (http://www.atomicarchive.com/Almanac/Testsite.shtml)

This crater is from the SEDAN test, as part of Project Plowshare. It was an underground explosion designed to test using nuclear explosions as a method to earth moving (building a canal for example).

Footage of the test can be viewed at:

Default Been there!

Yes, you are correct partially. Operation Plowshare was conducted here but also in New Mexico. If you think this crater is huge you should stand next to it!
The wierd thing is that the crater is a clynder with a rounded bottom more than a half mile deep and the material in the hole is so far down the wind can't blow in so it just lies there. Which is good because the thermal heat from the blast cooked it so it is finer than talcum powder and holds no moisture.
So, if a person or anything else fell in they would just keep falling until they hit bottom. Can you guess what it is used for today? THE DUMP!
If you look around you'll see dimples on the ground all over the place!
I spent 3 weeks here in 1983 for a NUWAX military exercise and on the next to the last day they brought in busses and took us on a tour of the place. It was pretty cool.
Actually set in the control room (looks like Houston control for NASA) at the button.
