This is a discussion thread for the following file:
Maiwand Lion, Reading, Berks On 27th July 1880, 328 men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment were killed in Maiwand, a village in Afghanistan, during the Second Afghan Campaign. The 31 ft long lion was erected in their memory. It's the largest sculpted lion and one of the largest bronze sculptures in the world.

Here's a better view of it. It turns out it may be cast iron rather than bronze. There's a local myth that the sculptor, George Blackall Simonds, killed himself after it was pointed out that lions don't stand the way he portrayed it, but it seems they can, and he lived a further 40 years.
