Klitgaarden was buildt in 1914 for King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine as summer residence. After King Christians death in 1947 Alexandrine used it until her death in 1952 and it was taken over by their son and daughter in law Prince Knud (1900-1976) and Princess Caroline Mathilde (1912-1995). After Caroline Mathildes death their relatives sold it to the Klitgaard Foundation and it was converted to a refugee for artists, scientest etc.
