Airbus will start delivery of the new A380 superjumbo from 2007. Lufthansa and other airlines are planning to operate this new widebody aircraft at the FRA hub. This will require a new maintenance hangar, which is to be built to the south of the airport site. Because the A380 will be used in air transportation irrespective of FRA’s expansion, Fraport filed a separate zoning request for the construction of the new hangar and the associated facilities in January 2003. During the course of the approval procedure, further potential for environmental optimization was found. In July 2004, Fraport AG declared its readiness to forgo a multi-story car park originally planned in the southern maintenance area of the airport, because this would further reduce the space needed and thus minimize the intervention in the forest.
Fraport AG’s land utilization agreement with Lufthansa for the site at the southern side of the airport, which is now ready for construction, runs for a period of 65 years. Lufthansa is investing about €150 million for the new A380 maintenance base – the largest industrial hall in Germany – at its Frankfurt home airport.
