Dumbarton Castle, Strathclyde

Dumbarton Castle has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Great Britain. Throughout the centuries it has been a place of considerable significance.

Dumbarton was the centre of the ancient kingdom of Strathclyde from the 5th century until 1018. It has a recorded history as a stronghold which is longer than any other fortification in Britain. The earliest reference to is is made by St Patrick in 450 AD.
