The original Maelstrom is the Moskstraumen, a powerful tidal current between the Lofoten Point (Lofotodden) and the island Vaero/y south west of the main chain of the Lofoten Islands, off the Norwegian coast. It has its name from the small island Mosken in the middle of the sound.
The Maelstrom is one of the strongest in the world.
The shallow strait, some 4-5 kilometres wide, lies between the island of Moskenes√łya and some islets off the island of Mosken, connects the Vestfjord and the northern part of the Norwegian Sea (north of Lofoten). The Moskstraumen forms twice a day when the tidal current changes direction, and has been measured with a speed of the water current of up to 27.7 km/h.
