Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar is one of the largest temples in the Indian state of Gujarat. A gold-leafed idol of Lord Swaminarayan, 2.1 metres in height is the focal point of the complex. A magnificently carved stone structure stands amid sprawling gardens. 6,000 tonnes of pink sandstone was used in building the monument. The beautiful monument came to international attention when 2 heavily armed terrorists attacked it in September 2002. 29 devotees were killed and 79 others were wounded in the attack.
