Mitchell Bomber Display

B-25 Mitchell bomber from the World War II era on display at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Both this aircraft and the airport are named for William Mitchell (1879-1936), who grew up in Milwaukee as the son of a senator and grandson of a famous railroad executive. Convicted of and having resigned his commission following a court martial for his outspoken criticism of his military superiors for what he saw as their complacency for air safety, today General Billy Mitchell is commonly regarded as the father of the US Air Force.
